SEAA InterCounties Summary
The SEAA InterCounties fixture was held on the 10th December 2016 at Horspath in Oxford. The teams that were selected for this fixture were chosen because of their high ranking performances at the Essex League race that was used as a trail, plus other Essex and Met League fixtures as appropriate.
We had some last minute drop outs due to injury and illness which meant some teams were a little depleted.
It poured down on the day conditions were hard going underfoot. At this fixture, only the U13's, U15's and U17's in the boys compete at this event.
U13 - there were several debutant's to county selection at this event and the boys managed a credible 9th place in the team race. There were top 40 placings for 30th Matt Brayshaw (CATS) and 32nd Alex Ford (Havering).
U15 - the boys managed to finish in 8th place in the team event and there were strong top 40 placings for 17th Danny Millward (Colchester), 33rd Oliver Lill (Basildon) and 38th Mungo Prior (Illford).
U17 - Elliott Cordery (Chelmsford) had a strong run to place in 7th. The Essex boys team managed a very respectable 5th place in the team event. There were top 40 placings for 23rd Tom Keevil (Chelmsford) and 26th Connor Page (Chelmsford).
CAU InterCounties Summary
The National InterCounties XC Championships was held at Prestwold Hall in Loughborogh. Conditions were dry but windy on the day, with underfoot being really challenging in the mud. The event was held on the 11th March.
Athletes were selected for this race at the county championships with the first 5 in each race been given automatic selection, with 3 discretionary places. There is an issue with this for the younger age groups given the time lapse between November and March.
We had some last minute pull outs due to injury and sadly a couple of 'no shows' from athletes on the day. As such, we were unable to field a full scoring team in the Senior Men. Also, the proximity of the English Schools XC meant many of the younger athletes elected to complete at that race instead of the InterCounties.
U13 - the boys team finished in 31st place at this event. There was a top 100 finish for 65th Matthew Brayshaw (CATS).
U15 - the boys managed to finish in a strong 13th place in the team event with top 100 placings for 49th Daniel Riley (Basildon), 78th Danny Millward (Colchester), 80th Aaron Samuel (Illford) and 92nd Mungo Prior (Illford).
U17 - the team finished in 15th place in the team event with a big run from Joseph Owen (Orion) in 15th (albeit injured) and 96th Isaac Brown (Basildon).
U20 - the U20 men had a really strong showing for 7th place nationally with a big 22nd for Amed Abdulle (Illford) and top 100 places for 50th Ben Davis (Havering), 51st Harry Smith (Essex Tri), 65th Max Jones (Basildon) and 79th Brandon Thorpe (Basildon).
Senior Men - with Adam Hickey unavailable due to injury and the likes of Tom Payn on pacemaking duties elsewhere, it was left to Rob Warner (Havering) to lead the Essex charge home with a very strong 65th place. There were credible performances from Steve Woodford, Angus Holford and Darren Southcott too. All the senior team ran with distinction and have my sincere thanks for turning out.
